St. Martin’s Day
GLSW students of levels 4 and younger create their own lanterns to carry during a St Martin’s Day parade. GLSW students and families light their lanterns and sing traditional St. Martin’s Day songs, while parading outdoors. The lanterns symbolize the Christ-like love shown by the Roman solider St. Martin who shared half of his cloak with a beggar during a snowstorm in 397 AD. After the parade, families watch a play given by GLSW students who retell the story of St. Martin, enjoy traditional German treats and socialize with other GLSW families.
